CIMONA CAFE CATERING – 3791 Bayview Street, Richmond, British Columbia, Canada (604) 275-3753

6 Mar

PRICE RANGE: $6-$30, averaging about 12$ for a decent meal.

My phone’s ringing in the morning.  I hate it when that happens.  It’s 10:00 am, which by my standards still constitutes as an ungodly hour.  Irritated, I answer the phone, expecting someone from work to beg me to come in for an earlier shift.  Nope.  Turns out it’s an impromptu brunch-run!  Now that’s something I can wake up and have energy for!

Walking in Steveston is always a treat for the food-lover, especially when that food-lover is seeking breakfast.  Many little gems can be found by those who look hard enough, and in this case we didn’t have to look to hard to find Cimona Café Catering.  The first thing I noticed about this place is the great atmosphere.  Located pretty close to fisherman’s wharf, this café overlooks Bayview Street, and provides a beautiful panoramic view of the street and of the water close by.  With an interior sporting a large bay-style-window, it provides a cozy place to hang out while you wake up in the morning.

Down to business.  My little posse orders a variety of drinks, namely coffee and orange juice.  Those items are pretty hard to mess up, so I’ll give them all a passing grade.   However, the main strength of this breakfast at this place boils down to one thing: Omelettes.

We take a Cheddar Cheese Omelette, a ‘West Coast’ Omelette (smoked salmon stuffing), and the usual suspects for side dishes: French Toast, Sausages, Hashbrowns, and Eggs.

“…cheddar cheese, well, that goes well with just about anything now doesn’t it?”

The first and best thing to note about the Omelettes are their texture.  Fluffy, light and NOT overcooked.  Definitely a win in that department.  Salmon goes surprisingly well with this time honoured classic, and cheddar cheese, well, that goes well with just about anything now doesn’t it?

The French Toast was okay; not a highlight but I suppose it got the job done.  One of my dining partners, a former A&W cook says that his old store (8671 No. 1 Road, Unit 4 Richmond, BC, Canada) can serve up a mean French Toast that can quite easily leave Cimona’s toast in the dust.  Hmm.  Well maybe one day I’ll have to take him up on that challenge.

Moving on, the sausages were pretty run-of-the-mill, but effective all the same.  My partners conceded that the most effective side-order were the Hash Browns, which were crisp on the outside, but pleasingly tender on the inside.  I myself could not really tell the difference between these Hash Browns and the frozen variety that can be bought at Safeway or Superstore.  Perhaps we’ll agree to disagree there.

In summary, the highlights from this impromptu breakfast had to be a great view, friendly service, and awesome Omelettes.  The washrooms also appeared to be well maintained, and I’m certain that’s a pleasant fact for anyone.
